I watched this movie twice in the past week trying to figure it out. The first time around I laughed and enjoyed myself, but was left with the question: “the film points out a definite problem, but it doesn’t really offer a solution.” I know movies are for entertainment - and if you watch this film, you will definitely be entertained - but I also know that film is one of the biggest ways in our culture to communicate an idea. For those of you who haven’t heard, Saved! is a satire on Christians. It takes place mostly at a Christian school, where all but one girl is “saved”. If you tune in to TBN, and you multiply whatever you see and hear by 10, the christian product you will end up with is Saved!. It is hilarious to watch as these high-schoolers delve so deeply into religion but have no concept of who Jesus Christ actually is. In one scene, in response to the allegation: “You don’t know the first thing about love.”, Mandy Moore’s character shouts: “I am filled with Christ’s love.” as she throws the Holy Book at the accuser. It’s funny that the only “un-saved” girl in the whole movie offers the most love and the least judgment out of everyone.
Saved! has a lot to say about the hyprocritism and absolutism of today’s modern christians, and after watching for the second time, I realized that it does offer some compelling solutions. I will leave you to figure out what you think the movie communicates to you.
While I was watching this movie with a friend of mine who doesnt know Christ, he said to me: “I have never met one christian who understands more than a non-christian.” He went on to say that christians are so quick to judge and slow to accept and never understand where people are coming from. That should scare us…it sure scared me.
