BBC Article

There is an interesting article on BBC News called American Dream Eludes the Poorest. It deals with the aftermath of Katrina as it looks further into race and poverty. The author of this article noticed that: “Because the United States is the richest country on earth, there was something particularly shocking about the images of America’s poor, stranded, helpless and hopeless, begging for aid from the US federal government.” A huge question the author raises is: How much can and should the american government help the poor? This article is definitely worth a read. Its short and is pretty insightful. Feel free to post a comment or share your reaction here.

Very interesting. What is the government’s role in dealing with poverty anyways? I read the article yesterday so I have been thinking about it a lot. I think we need to give money but that won’t be enough. Money is a tangible way to help the poor today but money runs out at some point and they will be poor again. Maybe providing jobs for people in and out of America would help. Creating new industries in poor areas around the world. Lot’s of nations have only one main export…maybe that should change. I don’t think Corporate America should build a bunch of plants in poor nations and rape the locals by paying them close to nothing. Why don’t we let them control the businesses?
