All I need to know I will learn in Colledge Callage College

“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.” Horace Mann (First President of Antioch University)

I saw this quote yesterday as I was waiting to have my interview with the director of the weekend college (Michael) at Antioch University. I applied to Antioch about one month ago, and yesterday was my interview. Antioch is a small University located in downtown Santa Barbara. They offer a cool program where you meet face to face with your instructors and class only one weekend per month, and you receive your BA in one and a half years. The way the school functions is less test and teacher dictation based and more interaction and experience based. They are one of the more innovative schools in terms of their classroom teaching process. Also, as I was having my interview, Michael was telling me that Antioch really focuses on social justice issues and that we will be getting a heavy dose of it during the program. At the end of our meeting, Michael extended his hand and said: “You are formally accepted to Antioch University!”

I am excited! I start on April 3rd…so quick! I am so glad that I finally get to continue my education and that it is going to be at a school that is different, focuses on social justice, has small classroom sizes (10 people), and makes it so that from the beginning of the program to the end I will be with the same 10-12 people. I am not excited because I see that after I finish the program I can then earn more money and be looked at as someone who is successful in our society. I am excited because I get to learn and hopefully become better equipped to make a difference in our world. I love that I am part of a school that has that Horace Mann quote as their focal point. I want to go to school and get an education because I want to win “some victory for humanity.” I want to learn how to better fight injustice. I’m gunna be busy, but I think that it will be worth it.
